Happenstance: The Dan and Claire Carlevaro Collection Selected by John Lindsey & Steve Zavattero, 2024
Presented by The San Francisco Art Dealers Association
The San Francisco Art Dealers Association (SFADA) is also pleased to exhibit Happenstance, a selection of works from the collection of Dan and Claire Carlevaro.
Claire is a wonderful and deeply respected Bay Area original, having been a collector for most of her life. She acquired works from galleries, art fairs, art school exhibits, studio visits and inspiring stumbled-upon works. In addition to focusing on Bay Area artists, she and her husband Dan (who passed in 2021) were attracted to works that exhibit sincerity and heart, mid-century abstract works, and works that incorporate found objects.
Claire was the founder of the Art Exchange Gallery. For over 30 years she specialized in resale, representing individuals and institutions needing to sell artwork. She started in Berkeley in 1984 and then moved her gallery to Geary Street, and then Columbus Avenue in San Francisco. The gallery program resulted in Claire becoming a specialist in resale. In addition, she held exhibitions of woman artists working from 1930-1970 despite the lack of recognition. Claire closed her gallery in 2011.
Claire has generously made a substantial donation of her impressive collection to SFADA, a selection of which we are proud to exhibit at the San Francisco Art Fair. Claire has long been a supporter of SFADA, believing that the organization has the potential to represent the importance of galleries as major contributors to the cultural life of the San Francisco Bay Area.
100% of proceeds from the sale of this collection will be used to benefit our non-profit 501(c)(6) organization and investing in the continued professional development of our Member galleries.
