San Francisco Art Fair at Fort Mason. The renown artist will be signing his
monograph, published by the John Natsoulas Press in 2023.

Mark Bulwinkle is one of the best-known Funk artists still working today. Originally
from Massachusetts, the artist came to California to study at the San Francisco Art
Institute at the height of the Funk Movement. While studying ceramics and
printmaking in school, he responded enthusiastically to the irreverent ethos of the
period. He quickly developed an iconography and an illustrative style centered around animals, and he used them to comment on taboos and the state of contemporary culture. After completing his studies, Bulwinkle found employment at the Bethlehem Shipyards in San Francisco, where he remained for almost 15 years. While there, he mastered the welding torch, and he became a pioneer of torch-cut metal sculpture. At the age of 40, he began to pursue artmaking full time, and he remains an avid practitioner of his many mediums.

Bulwinkle has become known throughout the Bay Area for his many pieces of public artwork and for his eccentric abode – deemed Bulwinkleland. Filled with hundreds of metal sculptures, his home in Oakland has garnered significant attention for its flamboyancy. With an upcoming exhibition at the John Natsoulas Gallery in June 2026, the artist continues to create his humorous sculptures and prints with abandon.

The Mark Bulwinkle publication will be available for purchase at Booth #E11 for $40. Click here to learn more about the publication.
