An evening celebrating three exhibitions at the de Saisset Museum.
Please join us for a multi-tiered celebration of three exhibitions at the de Saisset Museum addressing varying and interrelated aspects of place and history.
We begin with an introduction by Assistant Professor (English) Miah Jeffra on their Faculty-Driven Exhibition Where From / Where To?. The exhibition engages students from Jeffra’s ENGL 74 – New Forms for Creative Writing in generating ekphrastic texts—poems, short prose, hybrid forms—in response to visual artworks by members of the SCU community addressing the concept of “home.”
This will be followed by Mentors, Collaborations, Influences: New Acquisitions from the Diane Jonte-Pace and David Pace Collection featuring a selection of recent photographic acquisitions to the de Saisset’s permanent collection. Donated by Diane Jonte-Pace, Professor Emerita, Religious Studies, SCU, these works are paired with photographs by David Pace (b. 1951, d. 2020, SCU Department of Art and Art History faculty 1998-2012), on loan to the Museum from Jonte-Pace. These photographs explore Pace’s early influences and collaborative project with Stephen Wirtz in dialogue with those that Diane Jonte-Pace and David Pace collected.
We conclude with a walk-through of Jonathan Calm’s expansive exhibition To Wherever, Forever: Archives of Absence presented as a part of PhotoCarmel, a celebration of photography on the central coast organized by the Center for Photographic Arts. The conversation features Calm in dialogue with Ciara Ennis, de Saisset Director and Chief Curator. To Wherever, Forever traces intertwined histories of erasure, memory, and mobility across the American landscape through photography and embroidery.
