This is the last chance to experience AFROPOP, the inaugural exhibition of AOCA, the first African Contemporary Gallery in San Francisco.
Rather than proposing a singular narrative, AFROPOP embraces multiplicity, much like the continent of Africa. The exhibition understands ‘pop’ not as superficiality, but as circulation, accessibility, and cultural vitality- highlighting practices that are materially inventive, conceptually rigorous, and visually compelling.
Participating artists include: Ayanda Mabulu, Willie Bester, Noria Mabasa, Edozie Anedu, Souleymane Konate, Clint Strydom, Mederic Turay, Samuel Allerton, Denis Mubiru, Marcelle Tchopwe, Gavin Rain, Andre Stead, Aza Mansongi, Papytsho Mafolo, Knox Clayton, Akilah Watts, Pascal Konan, Carol Cauldwell, Mwass Githinji and Mark Chapman.
The exhibition includes painting, photography, and a large selection of sculpture and is on view through April 20, Tuesday to Saturday 11am to 5pm.
AOCA is also participating in the San Francisco Art Fair from 16 to 19 April and can be found at Booth F07.
